Job Purpose:
Individual will serve as the Program Coordinator for the FL Aquatic Preserves (AP) Continuous Water Quality
Monitoring Program (CWQMP) who will be responsible for the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of
the CWQMP, including field audits and the annual Technicians’ Training Workshop (TTW). This position will be
located at a FL AP site in the State of FL.
Specific Responsibilities:

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

Preferred Qualifications
A B.S. in Marine Science or other environmental field and two years of relevant work experience in database management are required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Access) is required.
Ability to effectively communicate with scientists verbally and in writing.
Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.

Job Duties 

The coordinator will maintain the APWQ SharePoint site and provide a spreadsheet to the Department Contract Manager reporting which APs are in compliance with submission dates, one week following the AP due date.

Coordinator will submit a quarterly progress spreadsheet to the Department Contract Manager documenting the QA/QC status of each AP station and document, including tertiary review, showing all previous year data uploads to the floridaapdata.org data portal.

The Coordinator will provide the Department Contract Manager with audit report(s) and documentation showing the annual performance and system audits status/progress report was distributed to the APs.

The coordinator will submit a list of committee members and defined committee obligations and protocol for oversight and corrective actions to the Department Contract Manager annually. The Coordinator will provide attendance lists, meeting minutes from each Data Management Committee meeting, and a prioritized list of research and analysis ideas.

The coordinator will plan, coordinate, and implement an annual Technicians’ Training Workshop (TTW).

Job Description

Under the supervision of a Fisheries Biologist or Senior Fisheries Biologist, the Fisheries Technician supplies technical assistance in accurately gathering, recording, programming and statistically analyzing data pertaining to fisheries research, culture and/or management.  Operate, maintain, repair, and construct various types of sampling data analysis equipment and fish culture equipment. Below is a short summary of each type of Technician position:

POSITION: Fisheries Technician - Research

LOCATION: OFRL, Norman, OK

Research Technician – Assists the biologist with scientific research through the collection, entry, and analysis of data. Uses the scientific method as it relates to research and shows a basic understanding of the common aspects of fisheries science (e.g., population dynamics such as age/growth, mortality, abundance measurements, and size distribution). Develop new skills as needed for research (e.g., tagging, sex ID, processing aging structures, diet ID). Prior research experience, experience with the dissemination of research through the peer review process and/or technical presentations, and familiarity with data analysis programs (e.g., R or Python) is preferred.

JOB DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Conduct fish population surveys for research or management purposes using various sampling gear.
  • Perform hatchery maintenance work which includes equipment maintenance and minor repair, maintenance of grounds, pond repair, painting, minor road repair, the operation of simple farm machinery.
  • Perform general fish culture duties which include feeding fish, fertilizing ponds, pond preparation and seeding, harvesting and moving fish. 
  • Use routine laboratory procedures to analyze field and hatchery collections. 
  • Apply fish culture techniques in transporting and stocking fish.
  • Maintain all field, laboratory, and office equipment in good operating condition. 
  • Maintain and constructs various types of equipment.
  • Assist supervisor in analysis and interpretation of data. 
  • Assist in planning projects, budgets, schedules, etc.  Prepare weekly, monthly, or annual reports as required.
  • Disseminate technical information on a variety of topics through newspapers, radio, television, speaking engagements, instructional clinics, etc. as assigned.
  • Requires reasonable expertise in using various machinery, tools, and equipment including fisheries sampling equipment, fish hauling equipment, water quality sampling equipment, laboratory equipment, hand and power tools, farm equipment and personal computers.
  • May be required to perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Must have the ability to:
    • Operate boats, motor vehicles, lawn mowers, tractors, and ATVs with various attachments.
    • Operate and use firearms, cutting torch, and welding equipment.
    • Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of 100 yards.
    • Ability to push / pull a minimum of 50 pounds to hook up trailers, load boats, and various other equipment.
    • Walk and jog over rough terrain for extended periods of time.
    • Must be able to swim.
    • Work alone in remote areas.
    • Endure various extremes of outdoor weather conditions.
    • Work extended hours, weekends, and stay overnight out of town.
    • Handle wild animals in live and dead condition, including field dressing wild game.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships, work independently, and be professional and courteous with the public and other agencies.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively in public speaking situations and be able to express oneself clearly and concisely in writing.
    • Operate and use small and handheld equipment and supplies.
    • Use personal computer and various office equipment.
    • Operate and use field traps, survey gear, and lab equipment.
    • Conduct day/night audio and visual surveys.

▼   Aquatic Plant Managment Specialist Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Deadline: October 20, 2025

Job Summary
This position functions as the DNR Commissioner’s delegate in administering aquatic habitat-related programs of the Department of Natural Resources, Section of Fisheries in the Southern 14 Counties of the Central Region. This position primarily involves the permitting and implementation of the Aquatic Plant Management Program (APM), covering the southern portion of Region 3.  This includes interacting with lake associations, riparian owners, and planning and zoning officials from local government units that deal with shoreline development and in-lake management of natural resources. This position also provides assistance to other staff to protect, preserve, and enhance fish and wildlife habitat through the effective implementation of best management practices as they relate to fisheries management activities. The person in this position functions as the lead worker in planning and implementing the APM program, assisting with habitat projects at the regional level and program consultation/assessment with the statewide habitat coordinator. 

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, fisheries, or closely associated area required. Transcripts are required for this position. Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be sent instructions for transcript review after the posting close date.

Transcript requirements:

  1. Fisheries and aquatic sciences courses. A minimum of 4 courses, for a total of 12 semester or 18 quarter hours. Of the 4 courses, at least 2 must be directly related to fisheries science, and at least 1 must cover principles of fisheries science and management.
  2. Other biological sciences courses that, when added to the preceding courses, total 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.
  3. Physical sciences courses. Fifteen semester or 23 quarter hours.
  4. Mathematics and statistics courses. Six semester or 9 quarter hours, including 1 college algebra and 1 statistics course or 2statistics courses.
  5. Communications courses. Nine semester or 13 quarter hours (3 semester or 5 quarter hours may be taken in communications intensive courses if officially designated as such by the university or college).

*To receive credit for coursework, letter grades awarded must be 'C-' or higher.
**Certification by the American Fisheries Society as an Associate Fisheries Professional or a Certified Fisheries Professional will be accepted in lieu of the required coursework.

  • Three (3) years of experience in fish management, aquatic ecosystems and habitat management, or other natural resource management field to sufficiently assess aquatic and riparian habitat for fish and wildlife benefits.
  • Ability to maintain and operate equipment, such as boats, motors, trailers, etc.
  • Oral communication and writing skills sufficient to document draft management plans/reports.
  • Interpersonal skills demonstrated when representing region at interagency meetings.
  • Public relations skills sufficient to interact with and maintain effective working relationships with the public.
  • Conflict management skills to analyze and resolve ambiguous or controversial situations and make difficult decisions on policy/program direction.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
  • Computer literacy, including a demonstrated knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.

The Department of Biology is seeking a 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant Professor in Biology/Coastal Ecology. NC State’s Climate and Sustainability Academy is seeking a dynamic postdoctoral research scholar to lead innovative, data-informed dialogue on landscape and environmental change across North Carolina and beyond. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

We seek a scientist with a focus on aquatic ecotoxicology who investigates questions related to organismal responses to current and future anthropogenic stressors and contaminants. Potential areas of research include but are not limited to molecular, biochemical, and organismal responses to contaminants (e.g., metals, pesticides, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, and/or emerging contaminants); mechanisms of toxicity; and multi-stressor experimental research. The successful candidate will be expected to use a custom-built, state-of-the-art 11,000 ft2 biosafety level 2 toxicology facility.  This facility contains two aquatic exposure chambers and is supported by an in-house aquaculture lab, molecular biology lab, and instrumentation lab. It is capable of precise flow-through control of a wide range of environmental variables and toxins. The candidate will be expected to:

(1) develop a strong, nationally recognized and externally funded research program;

(2) publish in peer-reviewed literature;

(3) mentor graduate students and undergraduate students;

(4) deliver engaging instruction, contributing to the educational mission of COA and SOSE by developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses related to aquatic ecotoxicology and broader coastal/marine sciences;

(5) engage in service activates to COA, SOSE, and USM; and

(6) Foster collaborations across USM's diverse academic units. Evaluation of applications will consider the potential of candidates to develop collaboration with other USM academic units including the Division of Marine Science.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the need for visa sponsorship. The University will not sponsor applicants for work visas (e.g., H-1B).

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

Publication in peer-reviewed literature and a record of scholarship, service, and grant development appropriate for the applicant’s rank.
