A Historic Legacy. A Bold Future.
For generations, the majestic live oaks along St. James Avenue have sheltered a place of gathering, learning and heritage in the heart of Fairhope. Today, the University of South Alabama is building on that legacy with a bold vision for USA by the Bay — a revitalized campus serving as a hub for education, culture, entrepreneurship and community connection across the Eastern Shore.
Established in Fairhope in 1984, just 21 years after the University’s founding in 1963, the campus became a permanent home in 1992 when South purchased the historic St. James Episcopal Church property. In April 2026, the University renamed the campus USA by the Bay, reaffirming its commitment to Fairhope and the surrounding community.
Now, through a $1.5 million campaign, South is investing in the future of this landmark and ensuring it continues to inspire generations to come.

Fairhope’s Front Porch for Learning and Culture
USA by the Bay connects the community with South’s faculty, alumni and expertise through educational programs, cultural events and partnerships. From its Speaker Series exploring topics such as marine science, culinary medicine and entrepreneurship to film festivals, summer camps and recitals, the campus serves as a vibrant hub for learning, culture and community engagement.
