Heroes Scholarship

The University of South Alabama has announced a new scholarship available to active-duty members of the U.S. military and all public safety employees employed by city, county, state, or federal agencies. The scholarship is for those seeking an undergraduate degree. 

Application Process and Details for Active-Duty Military

The Heroes Scholarship is designed to cover undergraduate tuition expenses not met by the federal government’s provision to active-duty personnel for tuition assistance. The program allows students to enroll in online or in-person courses, providing flexibility to accommodate their schedules. Applicants must be active members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard and will be required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

  • For admission, students can apply using this link: SouthAlabama.edu/Apply 
  • They can use our free application code for active military, HEROES. 
  • Students should complete the FAFSA to be considered for the award (Use federal code 001057). 
  • If admitted to South, students are directed to complete the Heroes scholarship application in JagSPOT. 
  • University makes the award after we see what the student is eligible for (after Tuition Assistance and potential Pell Grant).

Application Process and Details for Army and Air Force ROTC Cadets

The Heroes Scholarship is designed to help cover tuition expenses not met by federal or other tuition assistance. The program will allow students to enroll in online or in-person courses, providing flexibility to accommodate their schedules. Applicants must active Army or Air Force ROTC Cadets at the University of South Alabama. Applicants will also be required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. 

  • For admission, students can apply using this link: SouthAlabama.edu/Apply
  • Use our free application code: HEROES.
  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for the award (Use federal code 001057).
  • Once admitted to South, you will be directed to complete the Heroes scholarship application in JagSPOT, where you will supply proof of employment. 
  • Cadets receiving one of the incoming student institutional tuition scholarships are eligible for a scholarship to cover JagPack charges.
  • Cadets not receiving one of the incoming student institutional tuition scholarships are eligible for up to a $500.00 tuition scholarship. If tuition charges are already covered in full, the award can be applied toward JagPack charges.

Application Process and Details for Military Spouse

The Heroes Scholarship is designed to help cover tuition expenses for a legal spouse of an Active-Duty, National Guard, Reserve, or Coast Guard member. The program allows students to enroll in online or in-person courses, providing flexibility to accommodate their schedules.

  • They can use our free application code for active military, HEROES.
  • If admitted to South, students are directed to complete the Heroes scholarship application in JagSPOT. 
  • Students must provide documentation verifying they are a legal spouse of an Active-Duty, National Guard, Reserve, or Coast Guard member. Military Services will verify their records.
  • Students are eligible to receive up to $75 per credit hour, not to exceed $450.00 per semester, or a scholarship to cover JagPack charges if tuition has been covered in full by other funds.

Application Process and Details for Public Safety Employees

The Heroes Scholarship is designed to help cover tuition expenses not met by federal or other tuition assistance. The program will allow students to enroll in online or in-person courses, providing flexibility to accommodate their schedules. Applicants must be full-time public safety employees in EMS, law enforcement, fire-rescue, and emergency management fields. Applicants will also be required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

  • Use our free application code: HEROES. 
  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for the award (Use federal code 001057). 
  • Once admitted to South, you will be directed to complete the Heroes scholarship application in JagSPOT, where you will supply proof of employment. 
  • South provides a scholarship of up to $75 per credit hour, not to exceed $450.00 per semester, or a scholarship to cover JagPack charges if tuition has been covered in full by other funds. 
  • Only new part-time students are eligible for this award and it does not stack on top of any other university funding. Currently enrolled students do not qualify. 
  • Some public safety agencies may offer additional aid.

Application Process and Details for Mobile County Deputy Sheriff & Correctional Officer Foundation Members

We work with the Mobile County Deputy Sheriff & Correctional Officer Foundation to provide an undergraduate education to a new group of heroes.

  • For admission, students can apply using this link: SouthAlabama.edu/Apply  
  • Use our free application code: HEROES. 
  • Complete the FAFSA to be considered for the award (Use federal code, 001057). 
    Once admitted to South, you will be directed to complete the Heroes scholarship application in JagSPOT, where you will supply proof of employment. 
  • University makes the award after we see what the student is eligible for (after Foundation and potential Pell Grant).
  • The Foundation pays 50% the remaining balance and South will provide a scholarship of up to $75 per credit hour, not to exceed $450.00 per semester, or a scholarship to cover JagPack charges if tuition has been covered in full by other funds. 
  • Only students pursuing a criminal justice degree are eligible for participation.
