The Department of Biomedical Sciences educates students for successful health-related careers by providing instruction in core scientific content, encouraging critical thinking and providing active collaboration; it engages in hypothesis-driven research, embraces global diversity, and guides students to become life-long learners dedicated to enriching the scientific and healthcare community. The curriculum offers students a strong general education in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, followed by in-depth study in one of three concentrations: Pre-Health Professions (PHP). Biotechnology (BT), and Public and Global Health (PGH).
Emergency Medical Services (BS) Major Guide
The Department of EMS offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for students interested in a career in pre-hospital medicine, EMS education, and EMS management. As the field of EMS continues to grow and change, leaders and educators with a background in emergency medicine are needed to help shape the future of pre-hospital medicine and healthcare. This program is designed to prepare students for the clinical and administrative challenges of a career in Emergency Medical Services and healthcare in the 21st century.
Professional Health Sciences - Healthcare Management (BS) Major Guide
The Department of EMS Education at the University of South Alabama offers a Bachelor
of Science degree in Professional Health Sciences (PHS) for students seeking a comprehensive
foundation in health sciences, healthcare administration, or those planning to pursue
advanced degrees in healthcare. The program provides broad information of health related
disciplines and healthcare management, preparing graduates for diverse career opportunities.
PHS graduates are well-equipped for roles in healthcare administration, including
managing medical and dental practices, working in hospitals, long-term care facilities,
and health
insurance companies, as well as serving as pharmaceutical or medical supply representatives.
Additionally, the program serves as a strong foundation for those interested in pursuing
graduate degrees such as a Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Business
Administration (MBA), leading to advanced careers in hospital administration and other

Radiologic Sciences (BS) Major Guide
Radiographers perform imaging examinations and work closely with radiologists, who interpret medical images to diagnose or rule out disease or injury. Radiation therapists provide radiation treatments to patients who have cancer. Sonographers (also known as ultrasound technologists) perform diagnostic tests creating images, known as sonograms or ultrasounds, that depict the body’s organs and tissues.
The radiologic sciences program at the University of South Alabama offers general diagnostic radiography, specialized imaging (ultrasound, vascular radiography, CT, MRI, and mammography), radiation therapy, and radiology administration. The Radiologic Sciences Radiography and Radiation Therapy programs are fully accredited by The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.
Speech and Hearing Sciences (BS) Major Guide
Speech-language pathologists evaluate, treat, and prevent disorders in speech, language, cognition, fluency, voice, and swallowing. Audiologists identify, evaluate, and manage hearing, balance, and auditory processing disorders. The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology offers a minor and a Bachelor of Science in Speech & Hearing Sciences that readies the graduate for a variety of career and educational options based on the knowledge gained from this degree and individual interests and skills, including the three graduate degrees offered through the department.
